Carrot is seeking a seasoned, high-impact Senior Director of Communications to elevate Carrot’s voice as a leading authority in fertility, family-building, and hormonal health. In this role, you will own PR, earned thought leadership, and executive communications for Carrot, with a particular focus on our CEO and Chief Medical Officer as visible, trusted experts in digital health and virtual care. You will build and execute narrative strategies that are tied directly to business goals and compelling to the media, creating stories that generate proactive coverage, drive inbound interest from reporters, and position Carrot as the go-to voice on emerging trends and news in our space.

You have “been there and done that” in early-stage, mission-driven companies and know how to be both scrappy and strategic. You are equally comfortable rolling up your sleeves to pitch a story yourself as you are advising executives and cross-functional leaders on how communications can shape the market. You are a master storyteller who knows how to create provocative, differentiated narratives, and translate complex topics into memorable, human stories.

You will initially join as an individual contributor, working hands-on across earned media, executive visibility, and social. Over time, there may be an opportunity to build and manage a small team (e.g., social media support) as the function scales.

Responsibilities:

Narrative & Strategy

  • Develop and own an integrated communications strategy that elevates Carrot’s position as the leading voice in fertility, family-building, and hormonal health within digital health and virtual care.
  • Craft narrative frameworks and messaging architectures that align tightly with Carrot’s commercial priorities, product roadmap, and long-term brand positioning.
  • Identify and prioritize story arcs that resonate across Carrot’s B2B2C ecosystem: employers, payers, benefit consultants, and consumers.

PR & Media Relations

  • Lead earned media strategy end-to-end, from story ideation and pitching to media briefings and follow-through.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with trade media and reporters in digital health, virtual care, HR/benefits, and healthcare; become a trusted resource for their ongoing coverage.
  • Drive a steady drumbeat of tier-one and trade press coverage through proactive storytelling, newsjacking on relevant trends, and leveraging Carrot data and expertise.
  • Create press materials (press releases, media alerts, FAQs, talking points, briefing docs) that are clear, compelling, and on-message.

Executive Communications & Thought Leadership

  • Serve as a trusted communications partner to the CEO and Chief Medical Officer, helping shape and amplify their voices as category-leading experts.
  • Ghostwrite executive content including op-eds, bylines, keynote remarks, LinkedIn posts, and quotes authentically capturing each executive’s tone and perspective.
  • Build and manage a thought leadership platform and editorial calendar for key executives, aligned with major business milestones, policy and regulatory moments, and cultural conversations.
  • Prepare and media-train executives for high-stakes interviews, panels, and speaking opportunities, including practice sessions, key message drills, and Q&A prep.

Crisis & Issues Management

  • Develop and maintain a crisis communications playbook and supporting materials (holding statements, escalation paths, scenario plans).
  • Lead real-time communications strategy during sensitive or high-risk situations, partnering closely with Legal, Clinical, Operations, and Executive teams.
  • Stay calm and decisive under pressure, using judgment and experience to help Carrot navigate issues in a way that protects and strengthens our reputation.

Social Media & Digital Presence

  • Own the social media strategy across key channels, with a focus on LinkedIn and Instagram, to extend the reach of our PR and thought leadership efforts.
  • Develop and maintain social content calendars that elevate Carrot’s stories, member impact, and executive perspectives, in partnership with Brand and Content Marketing.
  • Measure and iterate on social performance, optimizing content formats, posting cadence, and storytelling approaches for our priority audiences.

B2B2C Ecosystem Storytelling

  • Craft communications that speak to multiple decision-makers and influencers: employers, payers, benefit consultants and consumers/members.
  • Tailor stories, proof points, and language to each audience while maintaining a cohesive overarching narrative.

Agency & Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Lead our PR agency partnership, providing clear direction, priorities, and feedback while ensuring excellent execution.
  • Partner with Marketing, Commercial, Client Success, Product and Clinical teams to source stories, elevate member and customer impact, and align comms with launches and campaigns.
  • Report on communications performance and recommend adjustments based on insights.

The Team:

This role sits on our Marketing team, reporting to the SVP of Marketing. You will partner most closely with the CEO, Chief Medical Officer, and the broader Marketing organization, while also collaborating with Commercial, Client Success, Clinical, and Product teams to ensure our external story reflects our business priorities and member impact. You will also lead and manage our external PR agency, setting clear direction, ensuring tight alignment with our narrative strategy, and holding the team to a high bar for results.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 15+ years of communications / PR experience, including significant time in digital health, virtual care, or healthcare technology.
  • Demonstrated success leading PR and communications for mission-driven, high-growth companies, ideally at growth stages.
  • Proven track record of building a company’s external profile so that reporters proactively seek the company’s POV on emerging stories.
  • Deep media relations experience with strong existing relationships across relevant trade and business outlets.
  • Demonstrated excellence in executive communications and ghostwriting, with a portfolio of op-eds, bylines, speeches, or thought leadership content authored for senior leaders.
  • Hands-on experience leading crisis or issue communications, including planning, decision-making, and post-mortem/learning processes.
  • Strong understanding of B2B2C dynamics in healthcare or benefits - how employers, payers, benefit consultants, and consumers influence buying decisions.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills: clear, concise, persuasive, and adaptable across formats.
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment, prioritize effectively, and manage multiple storylines and stakeholders at once.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience leading communications for a digital health category builder for employer-focused health solution.
  • Track record of building or scaling a communications function from scratch at an early-stage or scaling company.
  • Experience working closely with CEOs, CMOs, clinicians, and scientific/medical experts to translate complex concepts into accessible narratives.
  • Global or multi-market PR experience.
  • Prior experience leading or mentoring communications or social media talent.
  • Background that shows you are considered one of the top up-and-coming PR and comms leaders in the digital health ecosystem (e.g., notable campaigns, speaking, awards, or peer recognition).

Compensation:

Carrot offers a holistic Total Rewards package designed to support our employees in all aspects of their life inside and outside of work, including health and wellness benefits, retirement savings plans, short- and long-term incentives, parental leave, family-forming assistance, and a competitive compensation package. The starting base salary for this position will range from $210,000-$220,000. Actual compensation may vary from posted base salary depending on your confirmed job-related skills and experience.
