About Us:

HavocAI is an innovative defense technology company making scalable maritime autonomy a reality. We are pioneering an end-to-end solution for planning, tasking and control of uncrewed surface vessels (USVs). As we continue to quickly grow, we are looking for motivated individuals that are inspired to work within an extremely energetic, creative, and innovative team that is passionate about maritime robotics and exploring the open ocean. We work in a highly dynamic environment where collaboration and idea sharing are a way of life.

About the Role:
We’re seeking a Senior UX Engineer with 7+ years of experience to lead the design, architecture, and implementation of sophisticated, map-centric web applications. This role goes beyond coding—it’s for a seasoned engineer who thrives at the intersection of UX design, geospatial visualization, and frontend architecture. You'll be expected to drive technical decisions, mentor others, and shape the user experience strategy for complex, data-intensive systems.

The ideal candidate has a deep mastery of React, hands-on experience with WebGL and advanced visualization libraries, and a strong understanding of how to manage large-scale datasets on the frontend. You will be instrumental in defining both the technical architecture and the UX direction of our platform, collaborating closely with design, product, and backend teams to deliver exceptional user experiences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and development of intuitive, high-performance user interfaces for interactive map-based systems.
  • Architect scalable, maintainable frontend systems that manage complex geospatial and real-time data flows.
  • Implement dynamic visualizations using WebGL and frameworks such as Deck.gl, Three.js, or custom shaders.
  • Drive frontend architectural decisions and set best practices across engineering and UX teams.
  • Collaborate deeply with designers and researchers to translate user insights into elegant, functional UX.
  • Conduct and apply results from usability testing, heuristic reviews, and iterative prototyping.
  • Optimize rendering performance and user interaction for large, complex datasets and 3D environments.
  • Champion accessibility, responsive design, and cross-platform consistency.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers in modern frontend patterns and UX best practices.
  • Contribute to the evolution of our design system and shared UI component library.

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience in frontend development and UX engineering, with increasing scope and leadership.
  • Deep expertise in React and its ecosystem (Hooks, Context API, Redux, etc.).
  • Proven track record designing and building map-based applications using Mapbox, Leaflet, or OpenLayers.
  • Strong understanding of frontend state management, data architecture, and real-time data handling.
  • Advanced proficiency with performance tuning in large-scale, data-intensive applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead UX strategy within engineering organizations.
  • Experience working closely with product and design to shape feature roadmaps and user journeys.
  • Familiarity with RESTful APIs, GraphQL, and live data visualization patterns.
  • Excellent communication, cross-functional collaboration, and technical leadership skills.
  • U.S. citizenship required due to project scope.

Preferred Skills:

  • Hands-on experience with 3D geospatial visualization, GIS tools, and WebGL shader development.
  • Proficiency in TypeScript and strongly typed UI development environments.
  • Experience with WebAssembly, multithreaded rendering, and performance-optimized web workflows.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, frontend testing frameworks, and performance monitoring tools.
  • Previous experience in defense, aerospace, or real-time simulation environments.

Location:

  • This position can be 100% remote and must sit within the United States
  • Some travel is required

Compensation and Benefits:

  • The target salary range for this position is $140,000 - 170,000
  • 100% Employer paid Health, Dental and Vision Insurance for you and your families
  • Ability to participate in the companies 401k program
  • Unlimited PTO policy with an enforced 2 week minimum
  • Equity Package
  • Work / Home Office Stipend
  • Global Entry Re-Imbursement
  • 16 Week Paid Parental Leave
