Job Summary

The HR Generalist / Office Manager will be responsible for executing and enhancing our day-to-day HR functions while maintaining a high-functioning, welcoming Austin office. You’ll act as a trusted advisor for employees and ensure smooth delivery across onboarding, benefits, payroll, compliance, interview coordination, and employee experience. You’ll also own local office operations, onsite logistics, and team events—creating an environment where people can do their best work.

This hybrid role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of people operations and workplace experience.


Key Responsibilities

Employee Lifecycle & Experience

  • Oversee onboarding and offboarding processes, including I-9 verification, equipment setup, and welcome kits.
  • Conduct exit interviews and provide insights for retention and employee satisfaction.
  • Organize company swag logistics for new hires, milestones, and events.
  • Coordinate candidate interview scheduling and communication in Greenhouse.

Compensation, Benefits & Payroll

  • Administer benefits programs (health, dental, vision, wellness).
  • Partner with Finance to ensure timely and accurate payroll processing via Gusto.
  • Manage employee reimbursements and expense tracking.
  • Track and administer time off, leave policies, and accommodations (e.g., parental leave, FMLA, ADA).

People Operations & Compliance

  • Maintain employee data and documentation in HRIS (Gusto), ensuring accuracy and audit readiness.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and company policies.
  • Create and maintain internal HR policies, partnering with stakeholders for consistency and clarity.
  • Support internal audits, HR reporting, and data-driven people insights.

Performance, Growth & Development

  • Support performance review cycles, feedback tools, and goal-tracking systems.
  • Help administer promotion and leveling processes to ensure clarity and equity.
  • Partner with managers on development plans, learning initiatives, and career pathing.

Special Projects & Initiatives

  • Collaborate on internal comms, change management, and rollout of new HR tools or systems.
  • Continuously improve People Ops systems, templates, and workflows.

Office Management (Austin)

  • Manage daily office operations: supplies, snacks, vendor relationships, workspace organization, and general upkeep.
  • Coordinate logistics for onsite meetings, interviews, and events—room setup, A/V, catering, and travel.
  • Serve as the Austin point of contact for building access, safety, maintenance, and visitor coordination.
  • Welcome visiting team members, execs, and candidates to the space with thoughtful hospitality.
  • Experience or openness to supporting Thoughtful as we move to a new office location

Qualifications

  • ~5 years of HR generalist and/or office management experience in a fast-paced, tech-forward environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in HR, Business Admin, or a related field preferred.
  • Working knowledge of employment laws, payroll/benefits operations, and compliance best practices.
  • Hands-on experience with Gusto, Greenhouse, Notion, Slack, and Google Workspace.
  • Strong interpersonal, documentation, and organizational skills; high level of empathy and discretion.
  • Ability to prioritize and execute autonomously, with excellent judgment and attention to detail.
  • HR certification (PHR, SHRM-CP) a plus.
