Vecna Robotics seeks an experienced, senior-level mechanical engineer to aid in the design and implementation of our high-performance robotic systems. The Senior Mechanical Engineer works with a talented, cross-functional engineering team to design and build custom components, actuators, and sensing methods across many products and research areas.
The Senior Mechanical Engineer will work closely with our team of roboticists to develop next-generation automated systems that are used to transform the logistics industry and in real-world applications by Vecna Robotics' customers across the globe. The ideal candidate has mastery of both electro-mechanical systems and hydraulic systems. Interested candidates will be asked to demonstrate exceptional mechanical design skills and provide a portfolio of machines designed and built that show novel design skills in the area of actuation, sensing, and structural design.

In this role, the Senior Mechanical Engineer you will:
- Work as a member of Vecna Robotics' engineering team to design and develop concepts and R&D level prototypes and refine products.
- Build design knowledge about complex systems using rigorous engineering testing and qualitative analysis procedures.
- Take responsibility for entire systems and ensure parts work as designed. Ensure that junior engineers produce results with the required level of quality.
- Break down complex challenges into solvable pieces in a prioritized and time-effective manner.
- Provide design feedback and critical analysis of design decisions for the team.
- Organize and coordinate design reviews.
- Translate lessons learned into meaningful, efficient, and effective changes in product and processes.
- Discuss complex problems on a systems level, and frequently integrate engineering efforts with electrical and software engineers.
- Mentor junior-level mechanical engineers in best-practices and professional growth.
- Create and advocate for necessary internal process changes to ensure that both our products and processes are in line with the company’s goals and strategic vision.
- Produce, maintain, and release drawings into the company’s product lifecycle management (PLM) system in accordance with company’s documentation standards and processes.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot anomalies in fielded products.
- Cultivate and maintain good working relationships with colleagues, external suppliers, manufacturers, contractors, and other third parties critical to Vecna’s success.
- Keep on top of industry trends and technology. Advocate for adoption of new technology when it makes sense for company.
What we are looking for:
- Bachelor’s degree Mechanical Engineering or relevant engineering degree; Master’s degree preferred.
- 7 years minimum of practical work experience in a field related to product design, machine design, automation, or robotics.
- Hands-on design experience with articulated electro-mechanical systems.
- Mastery of tolerance stack analysis, engineering drawing creation, and GD&T.
- Demonstrated expertise or ability in:
- in cost-cutting strategies and value engineering initiatives.
- vendor procurement.
- taking a complex product from concept through production.
- designing for mass production, which may include experience in any of the following: machining, sheet metal, welding, casting, molding, or 3D printing.
- Excellent visual and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated aptitude for effective problem-solving, creative thinking, a proactive approach, and a keen enthusiasm for innovation with the ability to work in a dynamic, team-based environment.
- Proficient in:
- SolidWorks (or equivalent) modeling and with SolidWorks PDM or similar Product Data Management software
- conducting Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) for risk assessment and mitigation.
- creating function prototypes using a wide range of materials and techniques such as woodworking, metalworking, and welding.
- in interpreting hydraulic Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams and electrical schematics, facilitating the seamless integration of hydraulic and electrical systems into mechanical designs.
- in conducting simulations for mechanical systems and structures.
- Possesses a comprehensive understanding of electrical systems and controls, enabling effective collaboration with electrical engineers and integration of control components into mechanical designs.
- Experience with the following a plus:
- industrial design and surface modeling.
- Experience with CE and UL certification of complex electro-mechanical systems.
- Working knowledge of relevant safety standards for autonomous vehicles and robotic manipulation systems is a plus.
